65km Standley Monster

65km of unforgettable!

Start in the pre-dawn dark from Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm) and experience some of the steepest elevation anywhere on the trail before having the option of striding out a bit if you still have your legs on Section 2 and 1 on your way to the Telegraph Station finish line festival!

The 65km Standley Monster journeys through some of the most spectacular and runnable sections of the Larapinta Trail. The route starts off steep and rugged as the sun comes up for the first 13km and then becomes remote undulating singletrack with almost non-stop views of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Euro Ridge, 13km from the finish line, provides a final ‘sting in the tail’ with spectacular views as far as the eye can see to the East, North and West whilst giving tired legs a challenging final test.

65km of the best day ever!

The start line atmosphere for the Verstand Group 65km Standley Monster is electric. Just ask anyone who's been there to experience it for themselves. Head torches on, legs fresh, mind focussed and a smile from ear to ear with anticipation of a great day out on the Larapinta!

Not to be underestimated, there have been plenty of hectic tales from this feisty Monster over the years (cramps, dehydration, disorientation etc), a 65km finish in this terrain is something special you'll remember forever and deserves serious kudos. Finish line vibes, high fives and the best day ever are your reward that no-one can ever take from you.

65km Standley Monster Event Details Below

A 65 km Ultra Trail Marathon like no other! Running on challenging, rocky, technical terrain interlaced with sensational sections of flowy red dirt single track.

65km Standley Monster
65km Standley Monster

An early road trip of approximately 50 km out of Alice Springs to the start line at the culturally significant Standley Chasm will be rewarded with a heartfelt Welcome to Country experience from the owners and custodians of Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye). The peaceful surrounds of thousands of Eucalyptus whispering in the breeze, bird songs echo off the adjacent cliffs – you will sense you are in a special place before your run even starts...The 65 Standley Monster is also the only event with a head torch start!

Canyon Climb to Millers Flat

Beyond the Standley Chasm start line you will go into an awe-inspiring back canyon, with rocky technical sections and views up and down rugged ancient valleys full of ghost gums, cycads, mulga trees and spinifex. You will reach Millers Flat, where you need to turn left and climb the high route option. The climb up this hill will test your endurance, and is the first of only three significant climbs between you and the finish line. It is the most spectacular and technical of all the climbs. Don’t forget to take some priceless selfies on top of this ridge as sunrise unfolds right before your eyes!

Off this ridge, continue down through Jay Creek (13km) aid station and continuing on to Mulga Camp (22km) – both well deserved check points in country that otherwise feels like the middle of nowhere.

Simpsons Gap to the Finish Line

Reaching Simpsons Gap (40km) is a major milestone with only two mild climbs in comparison to the high route to come. Relatively easier running (albeit on tired legs) is your lot for the next 25km. Immediately upon leaving Wallaby Gap aid station (50km), Euro Ridge awaits....a genuine sting in the tail, but the views are worth it! Some frustratingly irregular trail may test your patience until the last 5kms into the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station finish line festival for one of the sweetest finishes you will ever experience!

Drop bags can be left at the time of registration at the Simpsons Gap aid station ~40 km. Our preference is for the insulated zip top shopping bags for consistency. Check point labels will be available to be filled out at registration to attach to your bags for clear identification. We encourage you to identify your bags with your own coloured ribbon or similar to allow you to find them quickly at the aid station.

A collection service will be available at the start line to take warm clothing etc to the finish line only. This is not an opportunity to give us your drop bags – that ship has sailed by then.

In May, the average daytime temperature is 23 degrees, with overnight lows around 7 degrees. There is approximately 11 hours of daylight and a low chance of rainfall. Generally, people find that due to the low humidity of the dry desert air, they need to drink more fluids than usual.
